What Are Dental Crowns

Crowns can help teeth look healthy and white even after damage occurs and restorations are needed.

Dental crowns are porcelain structures made to replace a damaged tooth. Getting a crown is a fairly common procedure, but at Legends Dental we’re dedicated to making the experience as painless and convenient as possible for you.

A dental crown is a cap that goes over the visible portion of your tooth. It’s often used to restore the size, shape, and overall appearance of the tooth in a simple, inexpensive way. They’re also used to finish a dental implant procedure once the titanium implant has healed and fused with the jawbone. Dental crowns can also help after an injury when teeth have been damaged or when decay and disease have become a problem.

Reasons to Get a Dental Crown

Dental crowns are common. Many times the reason for a crown is the tooth structure is beginning to fail after years with a large filling. Sometimes a new crown is put in to replace a previous crown that has become damaged or broken.

Here are a few reasons you may find yourself in need of a dental crown:

  • You have a large feeling that is beginning to fail
  • You had a root canal
  • You need to replace an existing crown
  • Your tooth is fractured or cracked
  • You have lost some of the height on a tooth due to grinding or clenching
  • You’re having a dental implant placed
  • You have worn-down or weak teeth
  • You want to correct small imperfections in the appearance of a tooth

How Do Crowns Work?

Teeth that have been worn down over the years sometimes begin to crack. Sometimes this occurs from grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw. In the case of a tooth infection requiring a root canal, treating the problem requires a partial replacement of the tooth. This is done with a crown, which seals the tooth from further damage and infection and creates a strong surface for chewing.

When you get a dental implant, the replacement tooth that sits on the titanium post is a porcelain crown that has been created to look and act just like the tooth it is replacing.

When we create crowns at Legends Dental, our priority is both function and appearance. You will be comfortable with the results and your new crown will have a long life because we use the latest technologies and techniques.
